Leading SAFe – Course Content

Dr. Thorsten Janning

SPCT Fellow, Languages: German, English

Thorsten Janning (born 1962) is a graduate mathematician working in the IT industry since 1990. His professional career took him as an architect and project manager of consulting and corporate users, as well as a college professor in the consulting and training business. As a co-founder (in 2002) he is partner and was CEO of the KEGON AG until the end of 2017.

His professional activity focuses on the development of lean and agile organizations, as well as the implementation of leanagile strategy and portfolio processes. Thorsten brought his years of experience in innovative development technologies in a variety of publications and training development and he was the editor-in-Chief of OBJEKTspektrum from 2012 to summer 2018. He is the first SAFe Practice Consultant Trainer in Germany since 09/2016. As the first German SAFe Fellow he is experienced counterpart for C-Level Management on their way in the digital future for their enterprises.

Frank Gärtner

SPC, Languages; German, Portuguese, English

Frank Gärtner (born 1970), German-Portuguese. Frank grew up in Lisbon and moved to Germay by the age of 16. He has a Diploma in Industry Economics from the University of Karlsruhe. He was raised in his youth in Portugal.

He is a highly experienced Agile Transformation Leader, Program Manager, and IT Consultant with a strong background in Financial Engineering, Telematics, and Software Development. With over 35 years in IT and financial services, I specialize in agile transformations, enterprise-scale program management, and technology-driven innovation.

Frank believes in practical, results-oriented agile transformation—not just theoretical frameworks. My approach combines deep technical understanding with a strategic business mindset, ensuring that organizations adopt agility at all levels. Whether it’s coaching teams, optimizing enterprise agility, or driving digital transformation, my focus remains on delivering measurable value.

He is specially keen on driving the innovation in his home, Portugal.

In the “Exploring Lean Portfolio Management” segment of the Leading SAFe® course, the primary learning goal is to help participants understand how to connect strategic objectives with execution through a Lean-Agile approach to budgeting, portfolio operations, and governance.

6. Leading the Lean-Agile Enterprise

Empower leaders to drive change, develop high-performing teams, and nurture a culture of relentless improvement.
Understand how to implement SAFe incrementally and sustain the transformation over time.

    Use Inspect & Adapt workshops, agile metrics, and retrospective feedback loops to gauge progress, validate solutions, and adjust course as needed.
